I woke at first light and thought, I am never going to write again-
But Still….It Begins
There is something of Jesus in a common day—almost touchable, just beneath the surface.
No not beneath the surface all around us, with in us.
No not within from outside maybe.
In poetic Spanish – A flor de piel!
Sunrise – whether it rises above gloriy like now, or pushes through the bleak, iron-gray of winter—still anounces bold:
This is a new day.
And now the songbirds answer—chorus and solo—
Taking my breath away with the wonder of it all. No not taking away but ordering my lungs to fill with Oxogen created a moment before.
Every bit as moving as when a baby finds its initial audacious melody…
And you know what I mean.
Not just coos…
but that instant when a baby releases its new debut—
with its reckless noise—
shattering every rule of grammar that might try to restrain it.
A self-invented melody, ignoring every law of music,
bringing something into the world that has never been..
Hot-dang new.
And the smile that comes with it—utterly one of a kind.
Boy or girl, you can almost tell what kind of cap belongs on that wee head –
a little derby… or a backwards baseball cap.
That smile isn’t for the baby itself.
Absolutely not – It’s a gift to the whole wide world.
Just like the sunlight twinkling in little eyes delighted in itself – a creation of God himself.
His personal poema –
Only God could do this—
turn light from 93 million miles away
into a baby’s smile,
a bird’s song,
a puppy’s reckless wag,
the blaze of orange…
…and it’s a trumpet to my soul that declares:
Every day is a new beginning.
Every morning, the whole world is made new.
And I hear the whispers of it—
with my dad and pops
with my teasing mom,
with my beautiful, handsome grandchildren,
with my children—still disarmingly cute in their 40s,
with my ever gorgeous wife…
and yes… even my ugly friends.
Wink
And I love those team mates still.
“This is the day that the Lord has made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
And beneath it all:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
And that is why—no matter the night behind us—
every morning speaks boldly to the very soul we almost forgot.
